Dear Weston Middle School Families:
On Wednesday, April 9, Rabbi Michael Friedman of Temple Israel will give a presentation in the Weston Middle School Library at 6:30 pm on Hate Symbols. This presentation is sponsored by the four Weston PTOs and the Weston Public Schools. This presentation is for parents of all backgrounds and will echo Rabbi Friedman’s presentations on this topic to WHS and WMS students that took place earlier this school year.
This week we will begin posting signs throughout the middle school reminding everyone of our expectations and our commitment to a positive, welcoming, school environment. Simply put, the message states: “Together we believe that hate has no place in the Weston Public Schools. Anyone who commits an act of hate, such as drawing a swastika or other hate symbol, will be subject to meaningful consequences which could include suspension or expulsion. If you see something, tell a trusted adult.”
This week, Mr. Blozie, our library media specialist, will work with sixth grade students to change their passwords for their Weston school accounts. This follows up on the lessons that he has provided students about internet safety and digital citizenship.
Author Alyson Gerber will be visiting WMS on Friday, April 11th. Alyson is the author of The Liars Society series and the critically acclaimed novels Focused, Braced, and Taking Up Space. A former marketing director, Alyson earned her MFA in creative writing at the New School. She grew up in New England and now lives in New York City with her family. Alyson will share her writing inspirations with students as well as discuss her latest book, THE LIARS SOCIETY: A RISKY GAME, which was officially released on April 1st. We are grateful to the Weston Middle School PTO for making this visit possible.
WMS Pathways to Wellness Program Weston Middle School students are encouraged to participate in WMS Pathways to Wellness, led by Josh Flaherty, LCSW, who facilitates the WHS ADAP peer group. The program is sponsored by ADAP, the Alcohol and Drug Awareness Program, of Weston. WMS Pathways to Wellness is a supportive approach to mental health wellness and substance use issues. Students will learn foundations of positive mental health, risks of substance misuse, and healthy, holistic coping skills to help navigate their adolescent years. This program will meet on four consecutive Thursdays from May 1 through May 22 from 2:45- 3:45 pm at Weston Middle School. There is a $100 registration fee. The deadline to register is Friday, April 25. For more information about this program and to register, please click this link.
Yondr Pouch Check We will do a Yondr Pouch check this week. It is our expectation that all students have their Yondr pouch in their backpack in the locked position whether they have a device or not.
