Posted Date: 01/13/2025

January 12, 2025

Dear Weston Middle School Families:

On Monday and Tuesday of this week students will take the winter NWEA math and reading assessments.  Once again, students do not need to study for these assessments.  The best way to prepare is to get a good night’s sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and make sure that they come to school with a fully charged chromebook. Students are welcome to bring snacks and the lunch waves will be a little later on Monday and Tuesday.

Coffee with Counselors  On  Wednesday, January 15th from 9-10AM in the LLC,   our school counselors will be facilitating an interactive Q&A session and a scenario-based discussion about life in the middle school.   We will address common concerns about social challenges and managing academic stress and provide resources to foster positive mental health.  We hope you can join us.

Attention 8th graders:  Help NASA grow food in space.  Interested students will work as a team to design an experiment to grow crops in lunar regolith.  This competition, Plant the Moon Challenge, Jr., is organized by the Institute of Competition Sciences.  An informational meeting for interested students  will be held on Tuesday, January 14 from 2:30-3 in room C-20.   Students will need to commit to one weekly meeting after school January - April.  (Dates will be shared at the informational meeting).  Research and report writing will also be required to take place outside of school.  Students can see this flyer or Ms. Castaldi, Ms. Welsh or Ms. Lancaster for additional information.

The American Math Competition will be held at WMS on January 27th, 2025 after school during Math Counts. Any student is welcome to participate! You do not need to be part of the Math Counts team. The AMC 8 is a 25-question, 40-minute competition designed for students in grade 8 and below. The competition focuses on middle school mathematics topics, including counting and probability, estimation, proportional reasoning, elementary geometry (including the Pythagorean Theorem), spatial visualization, and interpreting graphs and tables. Some of the later questions may touch on beginning algebra topics, such as linear or quadratic functions and coordinate geometry. Here is a link to some previous tests!! Please have your son/daughter use this form by December 20 to show their interest in taking the test. When the test date gets closer there will be additional registration information!
