WMS Week Ahead 11/24/2024

Posted Date: 11/25/2024

Dear Weston Middle School Families:

This week is a short one due to our Thanksgiving Recess.  There is no school on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday of this week.  I wish you all a healthy, safe, happy, and FUN Thanksgiving holiday.

Social Media and Our Kids  Last week, Max Stossel presented to Weston students (grades 7-12) and to our parent community.  His sessions were informative and provided useful tips on how we can be more mindful when using social media.  If you were unable to attend the session last Thursday, you can check out his website The Awake Kin... — Social Awakening. It includes a link to his parent presentation as well as other resources.  You can sign up for one month free of charge.  Mr. Stossel, while recognizing the benefits of smartphones and social media, encourages parents and communities to consider waiting until the end of eighth grade before providing children with Smartphones.  For more information on this movement, click here.

The Thanksgiving holiday offers a wonderful opportunity for families and friends to reconnect.  If you would like to try a “Tech Free” or “Tech Reduced” Thanksgiving, here are some suggestions:

  • Mention it ahead of time.  Invite your guests to participate in a “tech free” Thanksgiving and ask them to bring a tech fee game that everyone can enjoy.  Play “Salad Bowl”, Taboo, or another fun large group game.

  • Request no phones at the dinner table.  (Of course, if someone has an urgent need to be available by phone, they can keep their phone on vibrate.)

  • Turn off the TV during dinner.  This might be a challenge if your favorite team is playing.  Try to schedule dinner around the big games or simply turn down the volume and leave it on in the background.

  • Provide fun games and crafts for young children.  Creating festive decorations for the dinner table can be a perfect Thanksgiving craft.

  • Give Thanks.  Involve everyone in writing down what they are grateful for this year.  Everyone can write on a “feather” made of construction paper and then the “feathers” can be added to a paper turkey.  Keeping everyone engaged will cut down on their need to go onto the phone.

WMS PTO Fundraiser  Our PTO is sponsoring a fundraiser at Sugar Hollow Taproom featuring the band “Good Godfrey”, our very own Weston Dad band.   For more information or to purchase tickets, please click here.
